How to write technical papers?
William's book "Style: Towards Clarity and Grace" is the best I've found on learning to write effective but elegant english. There are newer versions that are supposed to have more hands-on examples but I've found this original really good and can't comment on the others. Anyway, William's is the best imho (I consider it Top-2 after the release of Pinker's book below).
Steven Pinker's "The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century" is up there with William's and, in a sense, more up-to-date. Both are good and I now recommend students to start with Pinker (for overview, purpose, goals and examples) and then go to Williams for more hands-on and detailed advice.
Write abstracts in a structured form (even if the "headings" cannot be included in the actual publication since conferences rarely and journals only sometimes allow them there; but you can have them in comments or take them out in final version in that case)
